Collection: Skill Building

Pottery classes can be daunting, especially when  you're asked what level you're at.

Below you'll find an easy way to rank your skill level.

These prerequisites are here for your good. We want you to have the ability to make high-quality pots. In order to make something like a teapot, you need other skills to be in place so that your final piece is high quality. By doing these classes, you'll also become faster and more consistent in all your throwing and hand building.

Beginners    Newbie who's watched YouTube and dreams of all the giant, gorgeous teapots you'll create in your first class, but have never touched clay or haven't for years? You're a beginner.

Beginner +     You've had your dreams crushed by your own body but you're determined to figure it out. You can center, make a bowl, and a cup. Now you're ready to learn about handles, lidded pots, and making your pieces look, you know, good.

Intermediate     You've improved your basic skills; cylinders, bowls, and trimming. Now you're adding to those skills. Now you're ready to learn to go bigger, find different ways to alter pieces, perfect trimming, and really get your decorating to be what you envision. You're ready for a challenge.

Advanced     You're really getting good. Now you need to add the next level of skills that take focus and even more design like lids, spouts, and combining forms. You're really figuring out what your style is and building a cohesive feel.

When do I become a member or take a continuing class? What's the difference? You've taken a class but feel like you want to work on the skills you've learned in the past so you have a better starting place for the next class. A membership or continuing class are both options.

Continuing Classes are your jam if you really enjoy being around others, being challenged, or want a teacher around who's going to help you figure things out when you get stuck or just want some questions answered.

Memberships are for you if you want independence, quiet, and feel like you can figure things out without much input. Once we've vetted you, there may be an option to access the studio 24/7, but this is at the discretion of the studio. Before that, you're free to come in any time we're open or during other classes. Basically whenever someone's there.
