* Prerequisite: Cylinder Bootcamp
The goal of Handles and Pitchers is to make multiple styles of handles and learn how to make pulled and hand built spouts. By the end of class, you will have made;
- At least 2 pitchers with well-made spouts
- Multi-Handled Pot
- At least 6 styles of handles
We will be challenging your thinking processes in the class. To make quality pitchers, the spout and handles need to not just line up evenly, but also to coordinate with the style of your pot. We'll be thinking through handle placement to make sure it feels right as you pour, as well as how to have less dribble from your spout after pouring. Sketchbooks are required for this class. This can be printer paper stapled together. We want you pre-thinking your designs and trying out different options on the same pots without having to make the whole pot.
Week 1: Basic handles 5 ways. We'll show you variations of pulled and hand built handles. We will begin attaching handles to your Handle Example Pot.
Week 2: Basic Spouts. For this class you'll need a leather-hard cylinder as well as a fresh cylinder with a thicker rim (shaped or straight). We'll be demonstrating how to pull a spout off the fresh cylinder, as well as how to add a hand-built spout to the leather-hard.
Week 3: Different Pots, Different Handles. We'll examine how to make handles for pots such as crocks, vases, and larger pieces. You'll talk through how to think through the design process of creating handles. We'll encourage you to sketch multiple handle options for each pot.
Week 4: Finishing Handles and Spouts. We'll talk through the clean-up process of handles and spouts to create the best finished product possible.
Class lasts 2 hours. The first hour will be instruction, the rest will be for practice. We expect all participants to practice outside of class. That could be at home in your own studio space, purchase studio time as part of class, or become a member (which also comes with perks!).
Students are responsible for:
- Bringing their own tools
- Sketchbook
- Providing their own clay. We will have plaster slabs available to recycle thrown pieces during class. DO NOT leave your clay on the plaster. It will become studio clay. No exceptions.
- Clean up. We will talk everyone through the cleanup process. If you choose not to clean up, you will not be able to take future classes.
Purchasing Studio Time in addition to Class gives you studio access during retail hours.
